Good afternoon,

I am please to advise you that we used the Zoll AED Plus for a witnessed collapse yesterday and it performed well above expectation. The patient was rescued successfully and is currently recovering at The Wollongong Hospital CCU. The prognosis is very good.

The response team was very impressed with the units’ performance, especially the rapid analysis of the trace.

On Sunday 18 July 2010 the  crew of Coast Guard  Sydney Vessel CG012 based at Drummoyne responded to an  offshore medical emergency about 1 mile  off South Head Sydney. The emergency call was placed by a deep sea charter vessel that had a passenger on board who had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. The victim was receiving CPR by 2 of the passengers who happened to be soldiers and were due to rendezvous with NSW Water Police & a Paramedic who were reroute from Rosebay to escort back to a waiting ambulance.

On hearing the distress call, Marine Rescue South Head called CG 012 who responded to assist as they were carrying an emergency backpack with oxygen and a defibrillator. The crew boarded the vessel and assisted in the treatment of the victim by attaching the Zoll defibrillator and followed the steps as instructed by the machine. The patient continued to receive CPR and in fact was defibrillated 4 times by the defibrillator over a period of 16 minutes prior to being handed over to the waiting Ambulance at Rosebay Wharf.

The crew were very impressed with the ease of use of the Zoll defibrillator and said “all we did was follow the visual and voice instructions until the ambulance arrived”.
